I've said it before and I will say it again - the 80s tends to get a really bad rep for fashion but it remains one of my absolute favourite eras. It is easy to see 80s style as just loud, brash and distasteful but it really was so much more than that. When you look closely, there are many modern day fashion trends and looks that originated in, or were developed in, the 1980s.
In this week's blog I am breaking down my Top Ten 1980s fashion looks with some fantastic examples from our current vintage fashion collection here at My Vintage. 1 - Bright and Kitsch T-Shirts
Bright and bold t-shirts are such a cute and fun 80s look. From cheeky slogans to quirky cartoons and many more in-between. This is a great original 1980s vintage Disney Minnie Mouse t-shirt in a lovely cerise pink. Large Minnie motif to front and made from a soft and comfortable cotton blend. This is in very good vintage condition.
2 - Leather Jackets
We absolutely love this uber eighties jacket, made in a buttery soft leather by Reginapary Paris. Rich taupe brown with panels of shimmering coffee. Full zip front with two side pockets and full lining. A real 80s flair and so well made, such a vintage gem. In very good vintage condition, only looks very lightly worn. Roll the sleeves to the elbow for full Michael Jackson vibes!
3 - Oversize Knits
We love this super cool 1980s vintage cardigan/coatigan in a gorgeous fluffy knit. Light grey and cream with light padding and lining. This vintage coatigan has a fluffy mohair style finish and stunning applique design with pearl beading highlights. This can be worn any size, depending how slouchy you want it to look. Such a great 80s piece and in very good vintage condition. Oversize knits look super cool with little 80s denim shorts or even over cute 80s sun dresses. They can also be worn with leggings or jeans and even with just tights - such a great all round investment.
4 - Cute Skirts
From pencil skirts to ra-ra skirt and mini skirt plus bodycon skirts; cute vintage skirts are a 1980s fashion staple. This is a simple and stylish pencil skirt from the mid 1980s. Pretty pastel lilac shade, perfect for mixing and matching with other block colour or printed tops. Non stretch with full lining. Cotton feel. Back zip and button fastening.
5 - Statement Jewellery
No 80s look is quite complete without some awesome statement jewellery. We love these stunning statement earrings from 80s Une Ligne Paris. Large round textured gold with pearlised centres. Clip on style. Approx 1.5” at widest point. In very good vintage condition.
6 - Power Suits
1980s power dressing come through! This is an awesome vintage suit in vivid red with contrasting black. Pencil skirt and fitted tailored blazer with asymmetric peplum style front. Made from a non stretch silky fabric with a slight crinkle texture. Decorative button detailing on the front and back of the jacket. Fixed waist pencil skirt with button and zip fastening. This is an amazing outfit and also great separates to mix and match with other looks. In very good vintage condition.
7 - Polka Dot Patterns
From Pretty Woman to Princess Di; there were so many awesome polka dot patterns in the 1980s. This is a super cool and funky 80s blouse in crossover style with collar and cute side-tie. Rich teal with big black polka dots. Concealed buttons for a secure fit. Some stretch. Some fuzzing but generally in very good vintage condition.
8 - Double Denim
Gorgeous bright vivid blue denim top/short sleeved jacket from Fink. Rounded neckline with short sleeves and elasticated hemline. Full button front and two buttoned chest pockets. Buttons are gold with black and blue star enamel design. Bib and chest area are adorned with pretty gold embroidered stars. Non stretch quality cotton. In very good vintage condition. Team these with jeans for the ultimate 80s double denim look - we love!
9 - Bright Tights
Awesome 80s vintage stockings in bright fuschia pink. 15 denier plain knit stockings ‘sheer all through’ One size to fit shoe sizes 4-7. 'Made by BHS, still has the original 59p and 49p stickers on the packaging. Never worn. From our range of 80s vintage, vintage lingerie and vintage stockings.
10 - Sequins
Striking vintage sequin top from the infamous Frank Usher. Vivid electric blue silk with a mixture of iridescent and black sequins. The black sequin flourishes are edged with tiny beads. Short sleeves and scalloped neckline. Full 80s shoulder pads to finish! Non stretch pull on style with small hook at eye at back of the neck. In very good vintage condition.
