Original 1950s Vintage Black Silk Crepe Beaded Evening Gown Size 12
1950s Vintage black silk crepe evening gown of exceptional quality and timeless, understated glamour. This is one of those rare pieces that doesn’t rely on bold colour or trend-led design, but instead speaks through craftsmanship, silhouette, and beautifully considered detail. The fabric itself is a rich, fluid silk crepe with a soft yet weighty drape, falling elegantly through the body and into a full-length skirt that moves with a graceful, almost liquid flow. There’s a quiet luxury to it — the kind you only really find in true vintage eveningwear of this era. The bodice is where this piece truly comes into its own, featuring an intricate hand-beaded panel in tonal black, forming a delicate, almost symmetrical floral and scroll motif that catches the light subtly rather than overtly. The beading is thoughtfully placed to enhance the shape of the bust, while the gently sculpted structure provides a flattering, supportive fit without feeling rigid. Wide set straps add balance and elegance, framing the neckline beautifully and giving the gown a refined, statuesque feel. The waistline dips softly into a flattering V-shape, elongating the torso before opening out into a sweeping, full skirt with incredible movement and volume. The skirt has that signature vintage “swish” — light and flowing yet substantial enough to hold its shape, making it ideal for formal occasions where presence matters. Fully lined for comfort, with a smooth inner layer that allows the outer silk crepe to glide effortlessly as you walk. Finished with a back zip fastening for ease of wear. Labelled Heiress, with additional Heelas, Reading gown specialist labels, which adds a lovely sense of provenance — these were the kind of garments sold through high-end department stores, chosen for their quality and occasionwear appeal. The fabric has that unmistakable feel of true vintage silk crepe: softly textured, breathable, and luxurious without any stretch. Approximate modern UK size 12 based on measurements. This is a piece that truly shines when styled simply — think classic heels and minimal jewellery to let the craftsmanship take centre stage, or elevate it further with vintage accessories for a full old-Hollywood evening look. In very good condition with only light signs of wear consistent with age.

MEASURED & READY TO WEAR
Carefully measured, described and prepared — no surprises.
At My Vintage, we take time to carefully measure each item of vintage clothing so that you have the best chance of ensuring a good fit whenever you buy from us. We measure the clothing laid flat as the diagrams show below and for bust, chest, waist and hips we double the measurement. For example, if the waist measures 17" across when laid flat then this would equate to a 34" waist (17 x 2 = 34)
We use the measurements we collate to assign each item of vintage clothing with an approximate modern-day size. For example, a dress with a 34" bust, 28" waist and 34" hips would normally equate to a current UK size 10. The labels on vintage clothing can vary massively depending on country of origin and date of manufacture. Clothing sizes have changed over the years and from decade to decade we see alternative types of sizing as well as variations on the way measurements equate to dress sizes.
We always recommend that you double-check the measurements of the vintage clothing item you are interested in, ideally by measuring an item of clothing you already own and that fits well, and comparing these measurements. There can be variations due to the desired fit, shape and fabric of an item but our size guidelines are normally very accurate and take the stress out of buying vintage online.
