Original 1970s Vintage Mary Harnes Geometric Print Dress Size 12/14
A striking 1970s vintage dress by Mary Harnes, made in England and showcasing the bold geometric prints that defined the decade’s confident aesthetic. The fabric is a thick, high-quality polyester blend with a gentle stretch, offering both structure and comfort. In tones of mocha, beige and taupe, the pattern forms an eye-catching intersecting check design that gives movement and texture to the fabric. The silhouette is a classic A-line cut, subtly fitted at the waist with the original matching belt, complete with a silver-tone slide-through buckle for an adjustable, polished finish. Rounded roll collar-softly sculpted and detailed with a decorative button accent, discreetly secured beneath with a discreet safety pin. The dress fastens with a back zip and features full-length sleeves that add balance to the mid-length skirt. While the original hook at the neck is missing, this does not affect wear, and the piece presents beautifully overall. Labelled a vintage size 16, the measurements correspond best to a modern UK size 12–14, depending on desired fit. Despite minor signs of age and some discolouration to the inner label, this dress remains in good vintage condition and is wonderfully wearable today — perfect for lovers of true 1970s design and distinctive prints. Pairs effortlessly with boots and a wool coat for the perfect retro-inspired autumn look.

At My Vintage, we take time to carefully measure each item of vintage clothing so that you have the best chance of ensuring a good fit whenever you buy from us. We measure the clothing laid flat as the diagrams show below and for bust, chest, waist and hips we double the measurement. For example, if the waist measures 17" across when laid flat then this would equate to a 34" waist (17 x 2 = 34)
We use the measurements we collate to assign each item of vintage clothing with an approximate modern-day size. For example, a dress with a 34" bust, 28" waist and 34" hips would normally equate to a current UK size 10. The labels on vintage clothing can vary massively depending on country of origin and date of manufacture. Clothing sizes have changed over the years and from decade to decade we see alternative types of sizing as well as variations on the way measurements equate to dress sizes.
We always recommend that you double-check the measurements of the vintage clothing item you are interested in, ideally by measuring an item of clothing you already own and that fits well, and comparing these measurements. There can be variations due to the desired fit, shape and fabric of an item but our size guidelines are normally very accurate and take the stress out of buying vintage online.
